The Aga Khan Studs’ French manager Georges Rimaud commented: "His Highness the Aga Khan is delighted to have his first ever runner in the Melbourne Cup. VEREMA is an improving filly that has won two consecutive Group 2 staying races against the colts. She likes good ground, travels well and is very consistent. Her trainer, Alain de Royer Dupré, who previously won the Melbourne Cup with Americain, believes she has the right profile to be competitive in this race, so His Highness decided to let her take her chance."
VEREMA won the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at Longchamp in July followed by the Group 2 Prix de Kergorlay in Deauville in August, on her most recent starts. The latter is the same race that Americain won on his way to victory in the Melbourne Cup back in 2010.
Over the past years, the Aga Khan Studs have sold several horses that have campaigned in Australia, the most notable graduates being triple Group 1 winner MANIGHAR (Linamix ex Mintly Fresh) and Group 1 winner MOURAYAN (Alhaarth ex Mouramara by Kahyasi).
In total, VEREMA has four wins and three placings from 12 starts. She is unlikely to have a preparatory race before her tilt at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 5th November.
