Azamour wins Group II Beresford Stakes

Monday 13 October 2003

Azamour shaped up like a top class prospect for next year when taking the Group II Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh yesterday.

An impressive winner at the same course in September on his only run to date, Azamour showed plenty of determination to haul back the long time leader just before the post. Asked if Azamour was likely to take the same route as Alamshar who won this contest last year, John Oxx replied: “I think a mile is possibly going to be the limit for him.” He then added: “Azamour is a smart colt and he did a good job today… We have quite a few promising two year olds, many of whom haven’t run, and this fellow might be the best of them.”

This promising victory followed Aga Khan bred Livadiya’s win in the Listed Denny Cordell Lavarack Memorial EBF Stakes at Gowran Park on Saturday.

Coming from a seemingly impossible position, Livadiya flew home in the final furlong to take the lead just before the winning post in this mile and one and a half furlong event. She had previously finished second in the Listed Solonoway Stakes over a mile last time out, having won two premier handicaps this season.
