SECOND STEP’s victory in the Gr 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin provided his sire DALAKHANI with his 8th individual winner at the highest level, and his 13th Group 1 success.
The Luca Cumani-trained SECOND STEP has reached maturity this season as a four-year-old and has now won three of his last four races. The colt opened his Stakes account back in October 2013 when taking the Listed Finale Stakes at the Curragh and has not looked back since. He was the stylish winner of the Gr 2 Jockey Club Stakes on his seasonal debut before being beaten half a length by Big Orange in the Gr 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes in July.
SECOND STEP moved up again in grade on Sunday when staying on gamely under pressure to secure the Gr 1 Grosser Preis von Baden from the talented Ito and German Derby winner Nutan back in third.
The Merry Fox Stud homebred SECOND STEP is a son of Sadler’s Wells mare My Dark Rosaleen, a full sister to Gr 2 Debutante Stakes victrix Silk And Scarlet who has produced a trio of Group 1 scorers. My Dark Rosaleen is the dam of dual winner Mallory Heights, also by DALAKHANI.
Following his Group 1 victory, Luca Cumani announced that his charge will be on his travels again, with his next objective being the Gr 1 Irish St Leger during Irish Champions Weekend.
Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero DALAKHANI has already sired the winner of this Irish Classic, thanks to Duncan in 2009, in addition to his other Classic scorers MOONSTONE, CONDUIT and Reliable Man.
The Aga Khan Studs sire will be represented by a pair of yearlings at the forthcoming Arqana August sale in Deauville, and by two more individuals in the Tattersalls Book 1 in October at Newmarket. The Goffs Orby Sale in September features one filly by DALAKHANI.
