LUMINATE, the brave and classy winner of the Gr.3 Prix Pénélope at Saint-Cloud today, is a fine example of the quality of the Aga Khan bloodlines and of their potential to produce top class horses even once they have left the green pastures of the Aga Khan Studs.
The three-year-old filly is a daughter of Lawman and KALANDARA, a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Kalanisi who was bred in Ireland. Consigned at the Goffs Breeding Stock Sale in 2013, KALANDARA was sold for just €35,000 to David Myerscough of Colbinstown Stud, who subsequently bred LUMINATE and sold her for €85,000 to John and Jake Warren.
LUMINATE has now won three races under the colours of Highclere Racing in as many outings. The charge of Freddy Head had made a winning debut at Deauville last year before taking the Gr.3 Prix de Condé by three lengths at Chantilly in October. Her style in the Gr.3 Prix Pénélope was equally impressive, as Francis Graffard’s Homerique had taken a decisive advantage two furlongs out, but LUMINATE showed great tenacity and class to come back and win surely by half a length.
The dark bay filly is now entered in the Gr.1 Prix Saint Alary and Gr.1 Prix de Diane and will be a strong contender.
