Leading French sire SIYOUNI took the honours in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly as his son SOTTSASS stormed past his rivals to score in fine style. Already sire of a Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and a Prix de Diane winner in Ervedya and Laurens, SIYOUNI now adds the French Derby to his Classic collection.
A winner at two years old, the exciting SOTTSASS has made excellent progress this season and most recently won the Listed Prix de Suresnes by six lengths on soft ground. He proved equally at ease on fast ground in the Prix du Jockey Club, and after following the favourite Persian King in the straight, he accelerated decisively in the final stages to score by two lengths, setting a new record for the contest and track in 2’02”90.
Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget and ridden by Christian Demuro, SOTTSASS was bred in France by the Ecurie des Monceaux. Out of Galileo mare Starlet’s Sister, he is a half-brother to four-time American Group 1 winner Sistercharlie, and like her, carries the colours of Peter Brandt’s White Birch Farm. SOTTSASS was bought as a yearling by Michel Zerolo for 340,000€ at Arqana’s August yearling sales in 2017. The colt holds an entry in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October and will be a force to be reckoned with in top class races from ten furlongs to a mile and a half.
