The Aga Khan Studs will consign another quality draft of 28 racing and breeding prospects at this year’s Arqana Summer Sale.
Already in 2022, the exploits of Gr.2 winner Irish Sequel (formerly Bashiyr), Stakes winners ZEYREK and DIAMIL and Gr.1 runner-up SHERAZ on the flat, and Gr.1 Irish Champion Hurdle second ZANAHIYR over jumps, have emphasised the value of Aga Khan pedigrees, which are wont to turn up good horses generation after generation.
The five broodmares on offer include two four-year-olds with top-class pages. Lot 304, VADALIYA, is from the illustrious Lagardère V family of Vazira and Vadawina that has received an important update this year in the form of Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Vadeni. Indeed, she is bred on very similar lines to Vadeni’s dam Vaderana (by Monsun), being a daughter of Monsun’s son Maxios and also out of mare by a Northern Dancer-line sire. VADALIYA sells in foal to to Zelzal, a son of SEA THE STARS who has produced Stakes winners from both his first two crops of racing age to date.
Lot 271, ROZIYNA, is herself a daughter of SEA THE STARS, who is also making strong inroads as a broodmare sire - including of Gr.2 winners Onesto and Eldar Eldarov and Gr.1-placed My Prospero in 2022. She is the first foal out of Listed-placed Rayisa, a half-sister to a Group winner from the family of champion Laurens and Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary winner Ridasiyna, and is sold in foal to Classic winner Victor Ludorum for her first cover.
A winning daughter of champion triple Gr.1 winner Mandesha, lot 253 MANDALAYA is a half-sister to Listed winner and Gr.1 performer Mandour, and offered in foal to DARIYAN, a leading sire of two-year-olds last year. The resulting foal will be born on the same DARIYAN/Elusive Quality cross as 2022 Group winner and Classic participant Mister Saint Paul. Mandesha has a 2020 filly by popular Haras de Bonneval sire ZARAK named Marindja, a yearling filly by Teofilo and a filly foal by Ghaiyyath to add to the page in years to come.
Lot 317 AFSHEEN has had two foals to race to date, and both have won in 2022. She is a winning half-sister to four Stakes horses, has a DARIYAN two-year-old Afshann in training with Francis-Henri Graffard and a yearling filly by champion French sire SIYOUNI to come.
The draft also features 14 three-year-old fillies, with several representatives of some of the most influential Aga Khan families. Among them are lot 331, DAYA, a half-sister to four winners whose second dam Daltawa is the dam of Daylami and Dalakhani, grandam of Dolniya and great-grandam of Dalkala; and lot 333, EBELIYA, the second foal of Stakes performer Ebayya, a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Ebiyza (dam of Group winning globetrotter Ebaiyra) from the renowned ‘E’ family of Ebadiyla, Edabiya, Enzeli and Estimate.
Fillies in training on offer include lot 292, SAVEYRA, who is out of a half-sister to Slickly and Sichilla, dam of SIYOUNI and grandam of Siyarafina, and lot 296 TASHOURA, a half-sister to two Group winners.
There are also two close relations to recent impressive Gr.3 Musidora Stakes winner and Gr.1 Oaks runner-up Emily Upjohn. Both HAROYA (lot 340) and HAZRA (lot 341) are by Golden Horn, therefore bred on the same cross as the exciting John Gosden-trained filly (who is by another son of Cape Cross in SEA THE STARS). This ‘H’ family also includes the likes of dual Classic winners HARZAND and Hurricane Lane.
The draft also includes such horses in training as 2021 Listed winner DARZAN (lot 464); 2022 winners SAMADABAD (lot 466), who recently broke his maiden by seven and a half lengths, VALIABAD (lot 406) and VELDENI (lot 407), winner of two starts this season; and CARAGHANN (lot 467), whose runs this year include a good second in a maiden at Compiegne in May.
A wildcard entry at lot 236A is MAKALOUN, a striking son of Bated Breath who was a Group winning and Group 1-placed two-year-old and won the Gr.3 Prix de Guiche at three.
The draft will be available to inspect from 2pm on Wednesday 29th June in Yard P.
