The Aga Khan Studs regret to inform the bloodstock community that the stallion, AZAMOUR has had to be put after sustaining a serious injury in his box this morning. Despite the best efforts of both vets and attending staff, the four time Group 1 winner had to be euthanised on humane grounds at around lunch time.
A wonderfully consistent racehorse, AZAMOUR won the St James’s Palace Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes as a three-year-old, before taking the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes as a four-year-old. He had proved an equally successful sire, producing many top class performers notably the ill-fated Group 1 winner VALYRA.
AZAMOUR was retired to Gilltown Stud in 2006 and he had recently shuttled for the first time to Brighthill Stud in New Zealand for the Southern Hemisphere season in 2013. He was standing his ninth consecutive season at Gilltown Stud alongside Dalakhani and Sea The Stars.
