1967 b. f. Hethersett - Won't Linger (Worden)
The Aga Khan’s acquisition of the stock belonging to Brook Holliday during the 1980s provided the stud with access into the powerful Cleaboy Stud family of Lost Soul. It didn’t possess the numerical weight of the Boussac collection but it was a quality group that had consistently rewarded the cultivation of Major Lionel Holliday and latterly his son Brook over many years.
It is appropriate therefore that the most important mare within the group, Hazy Idea, was closely inbred to Holliday’s 1947 Oaks runner-up and influential mare Netherton Maid, making her a member of his excellent Lost Soul family.
Trained by Major Dick Hern, who had sent out her sire Hethersett to win the St Leger for Holliday, Hazy Idea was a remarkably versatile filly, winning three races - including one over six furlongs - as a two-year-old and the 1970 March Stakes over one mile six furlongs at Goodwood at three.
By the time Hazy Idea joined the Aga Khan Studs, she had already produced the Flying Childers Stakes winner Hittite Glory and National Stakes runner-up Rubric. However, she was an aged mare and the Aga Khan was able to breed only three foals out of her.
The trio did at least include Hazaradjat, a winning Darshaan mare who has gone on to spawn something of her own legacy, primarily thanks to her Group 3-winning daughter Hazariya and minor scorer Handaza.
Hazariya foaled four Stakes winners led by the Aga Khan’s homebred Epsom and Irish Derby hero Harzand as well as Silver Flash Stakes scorer Harasiya, the granddam of champion miler Big Rock. Handaza, meanwhile, is the third dam of another champion Hurricane Lane.
Not to be outdone, another daughter of Hazaradjat, the Listed-placed Hidden Brief, foaled champion Emily Upjohn for Lordship Stud and Sunderland Holding Inc.
Indeed, this family is going through something of a purple patch with the likes of Big Rock, Hurricane Lane, Emily Upjohn and lGroup 2 winners Hanalia and Sweet William all representing it within recent years.
