Of all the gifts within the Jean-Luc Lagardère package, perhaps the most important was Sichilla as the dam of Siyouni.

The line spent a relatively brief period within the Lagardère operation, having joined with the purchase of Slipstream Queen for $110,000 at the 1995 Keeneland January Sale. The daughter of Conquistador Cielo was out of the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Handicap winner Country Queen and had been Listed-placed in the US herself. It proved to be an inspired purchase as she clicked immediately with Lagardère’s lynchpin stallion Linamix to produce champion Slickly, later a successful stallion for Darley in France.

Slipstream Queen left behind six Stakes performers in total, among them Sichilla who won the Listed Prix Amandine for the Aga Khan in the months following the Lagardère purchase. Like fellow Listed winner Rosawa, Sichilla next came to the fore during Arc weekend in 2009 when her first foal, Siyouni, won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère during Arc weekend to cap a brilliant juvenile season with Alain de Royer-Dupré.

Siyouni has since risen to become one of Europe’s elite sires, producing the winners of some of the most coveted Group 1 races. Meanwhile, Sichilla’s legacy has continued to blossom through daughters such as champion Siyouma, winner of the E.P. Taylor Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes, and Listed winners Sayana and Siyenica. Siyenica hit Group 1 heights at stud as the dam of 2019 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Siyarafina, another high-flying member of the broodmare band.
