In taking the Irish Derby on 30th June, High Chaparral continued an incredible year of high profile wins for progeny of ex-Aga Khan mares.

High Chaparral’s dam, Kasora, was bought by Irish breeder Sean Coughlan from the Aga Khan draft sent to Tattersalls December Sales in 1996. By the proven broodmare sire Darshaan, Kasora is out of the exceptional racemare, Kozana (1st Prix de Malleret Gr II, 1st Prix de Sandringham Gr III, 2nd Prix de Moulin Gr I, 3rd Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Gr I). High Chaparral is reputedly being aimed for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe this Autumn.

Other notable 2002 successes for offspring of ex-Aga Khan mares include the Japanese dual Group 3 winner Sunningdale. This three-year-old son of Warning is out of another Darshaan mare, Kadizadeh, who is a half-sister to Haras de Bonneval stallion, Kahyasi. Sunningdale has scored two impressive Group 3 wins over six furlongs and is now being prepared for an Autumn campaign in Japan.

Over in Germany, three-year-old colt Zarewitsch has taken the Group 3 Deutscher Herold-Preis at Hamburg over a mile. This son of Doyoun mare Zayraba is from one of the oldest Aga Khan families that traces through to Petite Etoile and Mumtaz Mahal on the dam’s side.

While in Italy the three-year-old filly, Kardthea has won the Group 3 Premio Mario Incisa over 1 ½ miles in Milan. She is out of the Shardari mare Kardiyra, who is a half-sister to the dam of Gilltown Stud’s first season sire, Kalanisi.

Finally the prolific black type producer Darara struck again when her son Diagliev took the Group 3 Prix de la Force at Chantilly. This ex-Aga Khan mare is a Group I winning half-sister to Darshaan and has now produced five individual Group performers.

Look out for this year’s draft of Aga Khan mares and maidens that will be selling this Winter in the following sales: Goffs Ireland November sale, Agence Française December Mixed sale, Tattersalls December Breeding Stock sale and the Goffs France Arc sale. All details of Aga Khan entries for these sales will be listed well in advance of the date of sale on this website.
