2021 b. g. Frankel - Candara (Barathea)
Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard
A son of Frankel and Candara, Candelari is a brother to three Stakes winners including Group 1 placed Candarliya.
This tall horse took time to reach his full potential, and although his debut was delayed, it proved to be a successful one. Candelari rewarded his connections for their patience, winning easily by eight lengths on his first start at Chantilly. He repeated the feat on the same racecourse in February 2025 before defeating Group 1 winner Double Major a month later.
After finishing a very close third in the Gr.3 Prix de Barbeville, Candelari was pitched into premier company in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier, in the first year that the race was run at Group 1 level. He took the lead two furlongs from home, and won going away by three and a half lengths.
"This was a proper Group 1 test and I think he's a champion at this trip,” said trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. “He's entered in the [Ascot] Gold Cup. We'll see how he comes out of this, but you know I like to challenge over there when the opportunity presents itself."
Descending from Lagardère lines as a son of Group-placed Calayana (Sinndar), Calandagan is from the family of Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Clodovil.
More about CalandaganCankoura inherited her grey colouring from dam Candarliya, a Group 2 wining daughter of Dalakhani who was also runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille.
